Godzilla is one of the most famous fictional monsters, with over 30 films both in Japan and America, multiple video games, novels, and more. The MonsterVerse, which is the recent American franchise, will continue following the success of 2024's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
The franchise features not only Godzilla but also King Kong, and it debuted in 2014, putting the two monsters in a film together in 2021. Following the success of 2024's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the franchise continues with a new entry. Kaitlyn Dever, the star of the upcoming film, confirmed to 7 News Australia that the upcoming Godzilla x Kong sequel has started production.
The actress attended the premiere of The Last of Us Season 2 in Sydney, Australia, as she is set to make her debut in HBO's hit adaptation. In the post-apocalyptic series, she will play Abby.
"I’m shooting another film up in Queensland right now, so I just popped down to Sydney for all of this press then I’m going back there," Dever teased at the premiere, noting she "can't get enough" of being in Australia after her recent Netflix hit, the limited series Apple Cider Vinegar. When asked whether the project is the Godzilla sequel, the actress confirmed it.
"It would be," she responded about the Godzilla project. "It would be, yes. I feel like I can say that now that this is... But yeah, that's what I'm doing up there."
Everything to Know About the Godzilla x Kong Sequel
The MonsterVerse franchise has been popular with audiences and received positive reviews from critics. So far, it has grossed over $2.5 billion worldwide at the box office. The previous entry, The New Empire, was the eighth highest-grossing film of the year, with $572.3 million worldwide. Before the release of the film, Adam Wingard, who directed the last two entries, teased his interest in another film based on the two characters that would turn into a Godzilla x Kong trilogy. However, Wingard ended up departing the project due to scheduling conflicts.
I Am Mother director Grant Sputore has joined the project as the new director. David Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), who wrote the story for the 2014's Godzilla, will write the story and the script for the new entry. Dever joined the project in January this year, with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire's Dan Stevens reportedly set to reprise his role as Trapper in the next film. Matthew Modine, Jack O'Connell, and Delroy Lindo are also part of the cast. Legacy hasn't confirmed the full cast, plot, and title.
Although it's unclear which direction the new movie will take, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire further explored the rivalry between Godzilla and Kong, and their individual importance. While the previous entry ended with Kong ruling over the Hollow Earth after fighting alongside Godzilla, the new sequel might further add other demons that will likely put the two together again to save the world.
The untitled Godzilla movie will premiere on Mar. 26, 2027.
